The Lewis and Clark general music classroom is a place where elementary students can be exposed to a wide variety of musical experiences. My students sing, dance, learn creative dramatics, play mallet instruments, use a wide variety of unpitched percussion, play hand drums and, until the pandemic, learn soprano recorders in 4th grade and alto recorders in the 5th grade. Adding ukulele to the 5th grade music curriculum will compliment their exposure to the world of musical possibilities and allow them to cultivate a musical skill that goes beyond the music classroom.
