One issue we face as educators is making sure our students get a diverse library of stories that represent as many nationalities, genders, sexualities, and cultures as possible. While many schools understand this, we often only understand this at a more skin-deep level. We search for books that show our students people who look like them - and often only like them. We also often focus primarily on historical figures instead of the students themselves. One of the best ways we extend worldviews is by showing our students people who do not look exactly like them or act in ways they are necessarily familiar with. If we are only going skin-deep, then we must find stories that feature ethnicities that our students may not be familiar with AS WELL AS stories that feature stories of people like them. We need to represent disabilities that students are or are not familiar with. We also don't know each and every student's inner identities. Unless we show them folks like them - gay, trans, gender nonconforming - we can never allow them to come out and be themselves. It is my goal to allow ALL students at our school to expand their worldviews and see themselves on the pages of the stories we give them.
