I teach 6 sections of 7th grade reading, two of which are advanced reading. All of my students take a state reading assessment in which they are expected to interact with the text on a deeper level and answer standardized inference questions. In order to do this effectively, one strategy that I teach is annotating the text for specific details. They highlight unknown vocabulary in one color, character descriptions in another, figurative language and sensory detail in a separate color, and main idea and details, cause and effect, sequential order, or text features in their own colors. This differentiation helps students visualize the details they are reading about and focus on what is important in the text to help them better understand the passage. We would so appreciate any donation, large or small, to help provide these supplies for my 7th grade reading classroom.
