COVID-19 has challenged teachers and school nurses in providing consistent health and wellness services to our students. Safety, health, and wellness measures are in place but previous educational and health services are not as accessible. We, as educators and healthcare providers, should not allow our students to endure the same struggles with the assistance of our community. When our students feel safe, well and healthy, they will thrive and learn to the best of their ability. Girls' and boys' go through many changes physically and emotionally during 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Their journey into adolescence happens at different ages and rates. Some parents are very supportive and other parents are not as comfortable providing this guidance. Educational tools and hygiene supplies that were available readily through donation, is not available this year. We have found free educational pamphlets, but financing for hygiene supplies have been more difficult. Prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, supplies for health screening for COVID-19 were available in bulk and inexpensive. We are finding some of the supplies are not accurate. For the safety and health of all students, we rely on health supplies, such as thermometers, to be accurate to determine if student should be sent home.
