Diverse books not only provide students with opportunities to expand literacy skills, they also provide an amazing opportunity to expand social skills. They provide a conversation piece to discuss differences while allowing the teacher to use their ideas in promoting an anti-bias classroom. Books that are representative of students send an underlying message that their cultures, values, and family structures matter. In a special education classroom, there is an even greater need to find books that are diverse as well as simple to meet the cognitive level of the students. The books I have selected contain short phrases on their pages in order to maintain student interest while also exposing students to different cultures.
