I’m the program director for the Outdoor Education program at Future School of Fort Smith. Our program is the first of its kind. We remove barriers of entry to the outdoors for 9-12th grade students. Most of our students have never set foot in a natural area despite living in the natural state. We have a 2 year program offering kids both hard and soft skills in the outdoors. The first year of the program is focused on becoming a responsible outdoor user. The second year of the program is really where we differ, instead of just building on skills, our 201 year focuses on creating good facilitators in the outdoors. The most important aspect of our program though is equity so it’s free. The largest barrier of entry into the outdoors is cost. Our students would never have the opportunity to participate in these activities due to cost. So we make it happen for free.
