Many of the students I work with have a reading disability, which impacts their academic skills and social-emotional skills. When children cannot perform as well as their peers or typical performing students, it can bring about discomfort, shame and interfere with motivation and performance. My mission is to help improve these skills and provide tools that can be used in the school and remote setting. Speech-Language therapy for my students helps them with their confidence in therapy, but they work to apply the learned skills to each of their school subjects. The Listen Learn Phonemic Awareness Program will help build the foundation of reading, which can identify and produce the corresponding sound for each letter. Guided reading activities in therapy sessions help with word recognition and vocabulary, but it gives life to the words that each child is working hard to learn. Literacy gives them the power to succeed in so many areas of their lives, and each activity chosen is meant to help do just that.
