Social and emotional learning otherwise known as (SEL) is the process in which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Now more than ever SEL is imperative in the school setting. Never before has this generation of learning been faced with such an overall heightened sense of anxiety. As we continue to face the effects of COVID 19, I want to help minimize the overwhelming feelings, emotions, and stress caused by this pandemic and other everyday triggers. A calm down corner is a designated space in the classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for my students to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional or physical control. This corner will house a bungee chair, books that target SEL, positive affirmation signs and posters, along with other calm and inviting elements. Your support and care will help this project come to life and give my students a safe place to deal with their emotions. It has been said that "Calmness is the cradle of power" and together we can give students back their power. Thank you in advance for your support.
