There is something about getting a brand new book that just feels special. Too often, students in our schools are given books to borrow. Most times these books are old and possibly even damaged. These books are not theirs to keep. They cannot write notes inside of them, they cannot highlight the parts that they love or are important to them. They cannot even write their name inside the front cover! This is not how reading is supposed to be. Reading is personal and readers need to be able to fully engage with their text. In order for them to do this, the book that they are reading needs to belong to them. The students in my Reading classes are mostly reluctant readers who struggle with reading. It is my goal as a Reading Teacher/Reading Specialist to instill a love of Reading in my students and to help even the most reluctant reader find SOMETHING that they enjoy reading. During a recent lesson I discovered that none of my students had read "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. Although it is a young adult novel, it remains to be one of my most favorite books of all time and I would appreciate the opportunity to share this love with my students. My idea for us is not just to read "The Giver" in class together. I would like to write a personal note to each student inside of their book and deliver the books, in person, to each of their houses. My goal is to make it special. I want my students to feel connected and cared for during this crazy time in education and at the same time help to foster a love of reading.
