As a counselor, I have always struggled with teaching students how to put an end to "bullying" and mean behavior as it is a common occurrence in most schools. It seemed that no matter what I had learned through bullying resources, none of the common tips or tricks were working. One day I ran across a video by a speaker named Brooks Gibbs who taught students how to stop aggression by staying calm and being kind. I later found that not only did he teach this concept, but so did his friend Chris Scheufele whom I happened to meet at a counseling conference last winter. Chris teaches students to be calm and kind to a bully. He will explain three reasons why people are mean to you and how to stop them. Bullies want the reaction. They want to see their target cry or get angry. When you are kind and calm to a bully, they will be bored and back off. It's a concept that makes sense and that I have seen work in my own school. Kindness is what we hope to see in students everyday and what better way to keep encouraging it? Chris will virtually speak to a K-3 group of students and a four to six group of students using comedy to engage them in this concept. He will be virtually meeting individually with a few of the students to help them with their specific needs. He will also be doing a staff and parent training so that they can further guide students through these concepts. My goal is to make this concept schoolwide so that it is something that everyone can remind students to do. I want our kids to be resilient when it comes to conflict and take this skill beyond the school building.
