Kids need to have a way to connect to the human experience. Through book discussions, we will have a shared context in order to explore themes of conflict and how one should respond using critical thinking and reasoning. The books give us a risk free way to open up about larger issues in our society and in turn, a vehicle in which to examine how others respond to those situations. Diversity of characters and experiences will also be an advantage to having these titles available to my students. Kids will grow in their reading ability but more importantly, in their empathy.
