All public schools in Hawaii are gearing up for budget cuts. Teacher positions and salaries will be reduced this year. I'm uncertain if I will our school will be able to give us money for basic school supplies. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of my students. We have been learning virtually since the start of this school year. As we prepare to reopen in a month, I want to make sure that this pandemic will not take away the heart of kindergarten which is purposeful play. An important component of kindergarten is center time. Center time allows students to have some choice in their learning. Kindergartners learn best through play. Students need social-emotional learning more than ever during these unprecedented times. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused me to reimagine how I can safely give my students the opportunity for center time. This year has been so stressful for students. Having the ability to grant my students a sense of normalcy and wonder through safe centers will encourage them to develop their social skills safely.
