One of the first major projects we do in my class is a project on family heritage. Each student completes a family tree and asks members of their family about their lives. They learn important interviewing skills that they can use in the future, then they write a biography about the person they have interviewed. Once this is completed, students are given an opportunity to create a family crest based on things they know about their families. Traditions, hobbies, things that they feel represent them --their crest will show their peers what their family is about.
