Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. It can allow students to responsibly choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as challenges or needs arise. The world we live in today is ever-changing and full of choices. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment and flexible seating helps them with that. I want my classroom environment to be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Flexible seating is said to enhance higher order thinking skills, such as emotional and problem-solving skills and conflict resolution. After all, taking turns rand sharing resources requires patience! Currently, my students are able to choose a location in the classroom that works best for them during our independent work times and collaboration times. These locations include sitting on their hard stools or standing at their tables, sitting or laying on the floor working with a clip-board, or using the few random cushions and pillows I have been able to purchase with my own money. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The floor seats with adjustable backing will allow for much more comfortable floor seating options which helps keep students focused and more attentive to their work. The wobble stools encourage active sitting and provide light exercise for the legs, back, and core. Last, the balance balls increase levels of attention, decrease levels of hyperactivity, and increase time on task. I believe there is no better way to show your support for a student-centered classroom than to help me create a flexible environment.
