With the funding of this project I will be able to teach Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien with The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, a illustrated memoir that incorporates the Vietnamese perspective into the Vietnam War. 11th grade at our school is focused on American literature, but we often forget that our country is filled with immigrants, refugees, and BIPOC stories that are untold in our current school approved literature. This will allow my students to challenge what is true American literature, what is the real American Dream, and what is the current America they are living in. This will help them understand that reflecting on diverse forms of literature and voices is integral in promoting social awareness and progress. Students will also see the possibilities of graphic novels being used in the narrative form along with their obligations and responsibilities to continue seeking out the narratives of those whose stories are rarely heard, often ignored.
