This year I have a high number of preschool students that are either non-verbal to minimally verbal and have challenges communicating basic wants and needs. The resources I have requested can aid in learning for all my PreK students, but especially the non-verbal to minimally verbal ones. The Echo microphone will be used to encourage any type of vocalization, not just words because of the fun feedback it provides. This is a beginning step when moving towards the goal of using words. The Go Talk buttons will provide a voice for these students by teaching them the cause and effect of selecting the button, then getting or doing what it says. Some students do not have the fine motor skills to learn or do sign language, and if they are unable to say the word, another option is use of voice output devices (which will have a picture on top of it, that's one of the uses of the velcro). This resource will be used for basic functional communication in the preschool class setting, such as going to the bathroom, wanting something to eat or drink, or needing help. The objects from the "Building Language Lotto Game" will be used for hands-on language learning opportunities, making a choice from two objects, showing understanding of object names/basic categories, or used as a reinforcement/reward for other tasks. Use of objects is preferred with this level of student since it is more concrete when teaching language than pictures. Learning the power of communication will aid those students in being able to participate more fully in the preschool class setting.
