Sometimes when my students come to school they are already in a mood. Most of the time this is out of their control due to environmental influences. As a special education teacher, I work with students who sometimes struggle to express or say what is bothering them. The items I am requesting are things I would use to de-escalate an upset student. When we are upset as adults we might go for a walk or climb in bed and cover our heads. I am requesting sensory tiles for my students to step on. The thing that is cool about these tiles is, they are movable. So I could carry them to where they are needed in the school. I can create different paths or challenges! What kid doesn't love a challenge. Each step creates a different painted picture. They are colorful tiles that are ever changing. Also, a balance board. If students stand on a balance board it helps them use their extra energy to focus on staying balances, as well as pay attention. Balance boards have many uses as well. It can be added to the sensory tiles to create a calm down path for the student who is frustrated. Last I am asking for an oversized bean bag. Because sometimes you just need to lay on a giant cloud and take a breather. School and Home can be overwhelming at times. If a student has a safe place to lay down and take a moment , it could really turn their day around! Also, on a rare occasion that they just need to kick and throw their arms, this would be a safe place to do that.
