Many of my students come from low income families. They have been through a lot of trauma in their own homes and need an outlet. They come to school frustrated with their home life, which leads to them possibly damaging themselves, others, or school property because they needed a short break from their schoolwork to help them get through the day and continue to learn. Throw in a pandemic, and many of my students have had a very tough year. They have to wear masks for extended periods of time, be distanced from their friends, and more all while being required to learn in a classroom. The fact is, my students need breaks along with their specialized instruction. As a first year teacher, I strive to give the students that need the most support the best instruction I can give. I need more instructional and sensory materials to do this so I can say my students are truly getting the best education I can give them. It all starts with individualizing their instruction further and providing them with breaks that will help them let out their frustration in a healthier way.
