The story Where the Red Fern Grows is a coming of age story about Billy and his two dogs. My 5th grade students are right around the age that Billy is when he begins his journey. They will really relate to this book because, just like Billy, they are growing up in the mountains and many of them go hunting just like Billy. This book also shows readers how to work hard for what you want, which is a great message for my students. The students will be able to relate to Billy as they follow him along on his journey.
The students will use the makers and crayons to create the setting of Where the Red Fern Grows and they will also draw their own homes and compare the two. They will also be able to create drawing of how they picture Old Dan and Little Ann when they read the book. The markers will also be used to underline main idea and details in red and blue, in the informational articles we read to go along with the story.
This book is such a great choice for my 5th graders because they truly are living in the same type of area as Billy, so they can relate to him. Almost all of my students have a pet so they are able to relate in that way as well. The book is a great coming of age story and my students are growing up this year as well. With COVID-19 affecting our school year it has been hard to keep the students motivated, but I know this book will do the trick.
