A good classroom novel can move students, cause them to question the world, and help them develop empathy. This novel does all three. I look forward to the discussion this book will ignite around inequalities that exist in our country. Putting a book into the hands of each student will allow us to continue these discussion in person or via google meets if they are learning remotely. As we read the book, we will also be reading primary source material to see how American citizens have used their voices for the good of our nation. It is empowering for students to learn that even at twelve their voices can make a difference. Seventh-grade students feel strongly about justice and fairness. This book will act as a catalyst to help students find their voices and then use them to make a difference in a real way in their own community.
