Lights, sounds, touches, smells are everywhere! Do you like the TV loud or quiet? Do you like hugs, or are you more like a cactus (no hugs allowed)? Everyone has sensory preferences, but for our students with Auditory Processing Disorder the everyday sensory input can destroy a mood, event, and day! Our school is filled with tiny sensory seekers and sensory avoiders who all have their own unique needs to help regulate their senses throughout the school day. Climbing, jumping, crashing, hiding, and shutting down are just a few ways children may react to sensory input throughout their day! It is important that we allow these movements and moments of quiet in early childhood classrooms. As teachers, we try to accommodate each child, but also provide a safe environment to allow for the movement or quiet times needed by our students. This year our school created our first sensory room that teachers can use for student sensory breaks throughout the day. We are excited to continue to add more to the room as we see learn more about each student's unique sensory needs. The liquid floor tiles, tap-play color changing light center, and tilt-turn liquid sensory windows provide tactile and visual input that can provide a calming moment for our students. The Ramptastic toy and the glitter sensory balls can provide a distraction along with amazing social engagement during sensory breaks. All of these items will be great additions to our sensory break room.
