The extracurricular activities that exist in a school system can define us. We make friends and learn life lessons through sports teams, find our passions in the debate, art, or drama club, and so much of who we are and who we become can be tied to not just what we did during school, but also what extracurriculars we did. Unfortunately, the pandemic has all but removed many of these experiences for today’s students. This is no different at our school, where we are navigating through hybrid and remote learning. This is such a pivotal time for the 8th graders I teach, and I would like to do something to help them stay engaged, work with kids outside of their normal classes, and do something hands-on versus being glued to a screen. I’ve been thinking for years of starting a robotics club, and while it may seem crazy to try to do this now, I actually think it’s the best time to get this off the ground. My goal is to create the first-ever robotics club for 8th graders at our middle school. Roughly 20 students will be able to participate. While we are in a remote learning/hybrid schedule, we will mail the kits, cables, accessories, and other requested materials to each student, meet with them virtually for an hour each week, and then discuss their progress in building, coding, and working with the robot they create. This would be the first time many of these students work with these types of materials, concepts, and technologies, and I think it will be both challenging and rewarding despite these difficult times. Your donation will help me bring this club to life in year one, and I plan to continue offering this important extracurricular option for years to come.
