My students will engage in collaborative problem solving when exploring the materials in the STEM bins. Using these constructivist-oriented materials, students will work together to build and create with open-ended blocks, cubes, tiles, straws, and task cards to stretch their thinking. Importantly for second graders, this process teaches them how to communicate with one another to build their creations. They must talk with one another to make many decisions, requiring them to observe closely, ask questions, justify their thinking, and ponder possibilities. The STEM bins will help incentivize students to complete other work too and better engage both sides of the brain. Classrooms need more of this kind of learning. We're building the next generation of critical thinkers and innovators!
