In a day and age where extreme accuracy and precision are required in nearly all aspects of science and exploration, the right tool for the job is essential. I believe that if students are going to be held to the highest standard, the tools that they use in the classroom should also follow suit. I am requesting tools for my classroom that will permit detailed measurements for all disciplines and units I teach throughout the school year. The triple beam balance will continue to be an invaluable tool that helps to introduce middle school students to the concept of mass. Working the slides back and forth and eyeballing the balance requires patience and diligence. The problem is that if an object has a mass of less than 0.1 of a gram, a lot of guessing comes into play. My science department does have two digital scales that measure accurately down to 0.1 of a gram, but in the field of Chemistry, greater precision is required. For my classroom and my students, I am requesting two digital balances that are accurate down to 0.01 of a gram.
