It is very important for children to see themselves in books. My class library is in need of more diverse books that have children of color as the main character. It is vital that children can see characters in books that are like them in some way. Stories can also be windows. Children can see the world through a window. Books in the classroom should provide this opportunity to all students. My students come from all different backgrounds and I want to celebrate that however I can! I believe that if I could offer my students more books that represent their cultures and family backgrounds that they would feel more included and welcome, as well as empowered to share their personal stories.
