It is well known that kids from low grades need to experiment and manipulate objects in order to retain the information that those objects provide when performing a task. My students are exposed to addition and subtraction daily but only digitally for they do not have the material to explore it through touch. That is why I chose the magnetic ten base blocks and the addition machine . These toys will support them to understand the process of regrouping using 2 and 3 digit numbers in addition and subtraction. Do not forget that the students in second grade have to be fluent in addition and subtraction from 1-20 ( adding machine) and they must be able to understand the process of regrouping ( magnetic ten base blocks).
