Every student served within our Therapeutic Intervention Program has a story and most often those stories are unfortunately full of traumas that need understanding and healing. As specially trained educators, we strive to provide a learning environment that balances academics with social-emotional learning in the context of trauma informed care. By providing a classroom library which focuses specifically on social-emotional learning, our teachers will be able to easily reference stories to re-teach skills in the moment, plan themed lessons around various stories, and provide reading opportunities to students within the calm spaces in the classroom. These books have been chosen especially for the topics they address such as, grief, empathy, inclusion, anxiety, fear, community building, and self-esteem just to name a few. In addition, parents and guardians will also be allowed to checkout books to take home and share with their children, therefore strengthening the home-school-connection. While our school library is good, it doesn't have the focus on social-emotional subjects that are included within this project. By providing such a specialized library to these students, we will not only strengthen literacy skills, but also provide an opportunity to build resilience and heal through the written word.
