We will be reading The Boys' War in my 5th grade classroom to build reading and writing skills and to enhance their knowledge of early American History. My students will use this book to broaden their perspectives! We will be comparing and contrasting, writing opinion essays, quoting accurately from the text, and learning about the issues and impact of the Civil War. Students will be pushed to put themselves in the shoes of the real people in this nonfiction book in order to understand the ideas and challenges they faced and then relate it to our time today.
