In our K-2 classrooms, we read books and use the themes throughout those books to be creative and learn more about STEM and how it influences our everyday lives. The kids light up when they are doing hands-on activities and learning about the world around them. This has been even more critical this year, as students don't have as many opportunities to "play" while learning! The books I've requested in this project will help continue to promote literacy and STEM for 250 K-2nd graders! One example of a project we did this year was reading the book "Splatter" by Diane Alber. We introduced primary and secondary colors, and made our own flower garden for each class using coffee filters, markers, and water. The kids were creative with their flower designs and had first-hand experience learning about how colors mix! We also read "Bear Snores On" by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman. We talked about the differences between animals and humans in the wintertime, what types of things we all needed in order to survive, and we built a "cave" for bear and his friends using tin foil and blocks.
