Many of my students are girls of color. We are an underfunded school in a poor district. My students are gifted and talented and are capable of combining art and science into truly special things. They are hungry to do so, but my classroom lacks all of the supplies necessary for my students to reach their potential. We do not even have a computer that will support design software. For many of my students, this class is their only opportunity to get hands-on science and engineering experience. My students are mostly girls. They feel safe trying scientific endeavors in this environment. Even if we don't have the materials to build robots, getting access to kits that they can manipulate and program will go a long way to teaching them science and engineering fundamentals, It will give them the confidence to combine creativity with technology!
