I plan to use this book as part of a long-term read along and art project. We are going to read together about Paul's survival, produce artwork that reflects upon his acts of ingenuity, and discuss how reimagining his surroundings helped him survive. Hatchet is always a timely story about grit, survival, and making the best of challenging situations. My students already have a strong sense of how they can change circumstances to suit their individuality. My hope is that by reading this book together we can see that perspective sharpened and applied more deliberately. They should not lose the sense that challenges can be overcome through the ability to rethink and reimagine whatever confronts them.
