Senior-level English classes focus on British literature. While it's critical that teachers expose students to classic literature from the canon, teens also need exposure to high-interest, engaging, modern literature. This novel by Nick Hornby is an excellent example of literary fiction, and it's written with young adults in mind. It follows the story of 16-year-old Sam who is torn between his dreams and reality. Students will be able to relate to the themes, they will enjoy Hornby's humor, and they will find this twisting, turning narratively memorable. I want to give my students an enjoyable, collective reading experience they will remember.
