Our students come from very poor homes to upper middle class homes. We have a neighborhood mix of Caucasian, Hispanic, and African-American students. The "Pennies for Peace" program allows every student to help others and empowers them to believe that they can make a difference individually and collectively. We are eager to enlighten and empower our children as to how they might help change the world one penny at a time. For example, 1 penny buys 1 pencil. 15 pennies buys one notebook. $20 of pennies buys school supplies for a year for a student. $600 of pennies pays a teacher’s salary for year. I must add that our students feel valued by their administrators, teachers, and peers, and know the value of giving and receiving -- particularly hugs! I refer to this phenomenon as my "fringe benefits." Our children will truly embrace the concept of helping students around the world to have more opportunities to learn.
