Children with autism have many challenges in learning. They need opportunities to practice skills with multiple materials. During COVID - 19, I have been lucky enough to have my students come into school but having enough materials for each individual student to interact with between sanitizing has been difficult. Hands-on learning materials help students with Autism learn. Hands on materials such as magnetic blocks and animals allow my students to practice math skills (e.g. identifying shapes, counting); language skills (e.g. requesting items, following directions); and social-emotional skills (e.g. waiting for a turn). Sensory items such as water, sand, slime, and foam help my students stay on task. Giving them a break to work with materials they can pour, pull, squeeze, and push.
