For those students who are not on grade level, I hope that a variety of books on different reading levels will provide them with choices of interesting books. The magazines can be taken home and shared with parents or younger siblings, thereby increasing literacy where it is needed most: across generations. In our small rural community, poverty and illiteracy have existed for generations. Students will be assigned to read and discuss articles WITH parents, guardians, older siblings, aunts, or uncles. Each person will write a brief reflection on their experience--whether it was the content of the article or the sharing or both that impressed them most.
