Because my students are staring at a computer screen all day, I want to provide them opportunities to read actual books - yes, the paper variety! During the second semester, these 10th graders will be researching individually chosen social justice issues and to get them excited and curious about this subject, I have chosen contemporary book titles for literature circles where small groups of students will read and study a book together. Our Pre-AP English 10 course strives to challenge all students across varying levels of readiness and their book choices need to reflect the diverse range of learners on their path to college and career readiness. Book choice combined with this new and rare opportunity to read these books the old fashioned way, promise to engage my diverse population of students who are struggling with virtual learning. Our librarians here at Borah have developed an efficient delivery system and this book title (There, There by Tommy Orange) will be an important addition to our other social justice book choices.
