I want to diversify my classroom. Now more than ever it is so important to have books that represent EVERYONE. Knowledge and awareness is the main way to fight ignorance and hate. It is the best way to help bring unity. That is why all of the individual books like the Tristan Strong series, the Joy Luck Club, Same But Different, and A Planet For Rent are so important to have and read. They feature minority characters that are the stars and heroes of their own story. Everyone deserves a learning environment that encompasses them. I also wanted to get bands for my active kids to help them focus in class and learn better. Lastly, I asked for a set of A Monster Calls because it is a graphic novel discussing the topic of death. I lost my father at a long age, and I wish I had read this book as a kid because it really helps you heal. It will connect to so many of my readers and show them the power of literature.
