My students just finished reading Dear Martin by Nic Stone. They loved it! Getting high school students to love reading is a definite challenge. The way to succeed is to find well-written books about characters they learn to care about with plots that are relevant to their lives. When they learned that Dear Martin had a sequel- they wanted to read it! I bought a copy of Dear Justyce, but couldn't afford to buy copies for my students. I would love to have a copy for each student to read. They are so into the characters and plot, and I want to keep up the momentum and encourage them to keep reading. They really relate to Nic Stone's writing style and realistic and witty dialogue as well as the compelling plot and characters. Her topic of racial discrimination is relevant to their lives. They are trying to make sense of what they see on the news, and they need to read about young people of color working hard to make a difference in the world. If I can get my students to be crazy about an author and want to read all of her titles, I may actually develop some life-long readers.
