As a new teacher I was fortunate to have many books donated to me in order to start my classroom library. I learned quickly that one very important feature was missing though. In most all of my gifted books, my students are unable to see themselves nor their lives depicted within them. My students not only need, but deserve, to read about both fictional and nonfictional characters that they can personally relate to. These carefully selected books will allow my students to connect with identifiable characters that will inspire them and in turn will help them fall in love with reading. Every day I strive to create a safe, loving, nurturing, and challenging environment for my students. When I reflect upon myself as a teacher and on my classroom, I am missing this very important piece that will absolutely be a game changer for my students. Thank you in advance for your consideration to fund my project!
