In my small, rural community, agriculture is the leading industry by a wide margin. A majority of the students in school come from agricultural backgrounds, primarily farming and ranching. Most of these students also have a desire to come back to the family farm to continue on that proud tradition. As the Agricultural Education teacher, I have the opportunity to not only teach students from traditional agricultural backgrounds, but also those that may live in town and don't understand how most of the things they do can be tied to the agricultural industry. With this podcasting setup, students in my classes will be able to help tell the story of agriculture and why it is so important. Students will have the chance to learn about every part of the podcasting workflow, including setting up audio equipment, understanding audio terms, editing audio files, and uploading them to a podcast hosting service. We will also integrate concepts from other content areas as well, using current agricultural news topics as a starting point. Students will have to prepare to host the show on a rotating basis, which means gathering stories, doing show prep, creating scripts, scheduling guests, all of the things that make a great podcast. Without even knowing it, students will have incorporated English skills as they write scripts and notes, Social Studies as they discuss history and societal impacts of the topics, and Music as they have to introduce Intro and Outro music beds. Not to mention the other content areas as these intelligent students showcase their knowledge on topics. Truly, this podcasting assignment will be a vessel for them to showcase knowledge from many areas, all while building their ability to speak, discuss, and create.
