Culture is a great topic in our classroom. We start each day with a writing journal prompt. This helps my students focus for the day, get their writing skills flowing, and as well helps me learn more about them. The majority always express how much they love their culture. Whether it is the food, the festivities, traditions, or morals they love their culture. In today's political climate I have noticed that sometimes for individuals it can be difficult to express who they are based on their culture and traditions. The books I have selected embody and express what it is to be of a minority group and what one can achieve despite external factors that try to diminish minority groups. These books will help my students have books to read at home during distance learning. Some of my students do not have access to books and I would love to be able to provide them with books that are meaningful and relatable to my students. My students are from different diverse backgrounds. I think it is important for them to understand that they can embrace who they are despite external factors. I want my students to love who they are and what their culture represents to their families and them. As stated many of them always express their love for their culture's food and traditions. For example, I have quite a few students who express their love for the Mexican cuisine plate of Mole. Through these books, they will be able to navigate situations in which external factors tried to diminish the culture and or gender but despite the factors, the characters in these books are able to triumph. I want my students to understand this and as well as a triumph by embodying who they are.
