In the homes of most of my kids, from a very low economic urban area, they have never seen a newspaper. They live in neighborhoods that are heavily populated by gang members, high school drop-outs, and a lack of parental support. The odds are against them and, yet, they absolutely love learning. They love to read and some of my 6th graders have read more books in several months that many adults have this year. Every morning we have a chant that ends with my students saying, "We persevere! We respect! We act with integrity! We're disciplined! We're excellent! We're going to college someday!" They are. They're going to college someday...but we need your help.
