Using mentor texts as an example for student writing has been very beneficial in my second grade classroom. Through mentor texts, students are able to make connections from reading to their writing. Additionally, mentor texts can be used to increase engagement during instruction. While these texts are only sometimes available at local libraries, I unfortunately do not have these books in my classroom. Therefore, having each book readily available in my classroom will have the greatest impact on my students because the books are not always accessible at outside sources when needed. Having a classroom set of books would ensure that I am able to use mentor texts more frequently in my instruction. Not only would the mentor texts be used during instruction, but they would also add a variety of book choices to my classroom library for my students to read. I am looking forward to enhancing student writing, increasing engagement during instruction, and adding to my classroom library through mentor texts.
