I am striving to make my classroom a literacy rich environment using the English language. Most of my children come from homes where English is not spoken. In addition, they will be attending public school and expected to be proficient in English. My goal this year is to bridge the gap. I want to help my children become familiar with the alphabet, letter sounds, beginning rhyming, and beginning book knowledge to make learning to read and write easy and fun. I have chosen the items on my list based on what is going to benefit the children in my class the most. I know that alphabet knowledge is key to becoming a proficient reader. I took into account what would be fun and appealing to this age group. They need to be able to manipulate and explore books and letters. I am excited and hopeful that my literacy project will be funded. I know with doner's help, many children will benefit from this project and become lifelong readers and writers. Perhaps they will be able to teach their parents how to read and write in English also!!
