Students who don't "do" school need to be challenged in ways that don't include workbooks and sitting in a seat all day. Giving kids an opportunity to work with power tools, drills, routers, and saws, allows kids to become invested in their learning. My students are at our alternative school for many reasons, but one thing for sure is the "normal" school hasn't worked for them. Hands-on learning in a makerspace helps students find out that learning can be fun and useful. Students will answer challenging, real-world questions using real tools, like drills, routers, and saws. Students will gain hands-on experiences while collaborating with classmates, experts, and teachers. Students will experience real-world work experience.
