5th grade is when students expand their vocabulary and increase their understanding of language. While they are expanding their knowledge, unfortunately their spelling skills are not always on par with their increasing vocabulary. In previous years, students were able to share a small set of class student dictionaries. This year, however, due to the limitations on shared supplies, our class has not had that luxury. In some school settings, students would have access to their phones or digital spelling tools. Being a small elementary school, we choose to restrict cell phone access and prefer to use "old school" dictionaries. Even in this digital age, it is important for students to improve their spelling skills and increase their vocabulary. When using electronics, students need a basic understanding of word spelling to search effectively. It is my desire to have a small student dictionary for each student. These will be intended to stay in student backpacks where they will have access both at school and at home.
