Students have Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time daily. With virtual learning, many students do not have books to read at home. Additionally, some have a limited selection. When asked what they are reading or reading about, students do not respond with excitement. These culturally relevant reading materials, for both boys and girls, will help engage and inspire them to read, as we navigate the world of virtual learning. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the election. Thus, The Truths We Hold by Kamala Harris would definitely excite the girls. The boys are interested in basketball, so I believe they would enjoy The Crossover by Kwame Alexander.
