By exploring this text, my 8th grade English and Language Arts students will consider the importance of empathy, kindness, and perspective. Harbor Me follows the story of six students who are given a unique opportunity. At the end of the school day, their teacher provides them with their own space to talk. She leaves the room, allowing them the chance to express their hopes, dreams, anxieties, fears, etc. in a relatively unfiltered manner. As time passes, the group learns to cherish their time together as each finds the courage to share their struggles. As they grow together and begin to truly trust one another, readers learn about each character's hardships. For instance, Esteban grapples with fears that his father will be deported, and Amari is frustrated by racial profiling in his community. As the novel progresses, Haley, the narrator, gains a deeper understanding of the world and the power of her own voice. My goal is that this novel will encourage students to appreciate the power of their own unique voices. Harbor Me navigates difficult topics. As the six students in the book work to understand their world together, I'm confident that this text will prompt my 8th graders to have their own meaningful classroom conversations. This text will help me to guide students in understanding their own place in history and their own ability to affect change.
