As a Cross Categorical Special Education Teacher, the students that I support have a variety of disabilities and needs. The biggest struggle that we have is in keeping them engaged with instructional activities. Many have attention and focus difficulties that make it more than a minimal challenge for them to just attend to their teachers. Others are very easily distracted. Some literally can not stop moving and many have sensory needs that can vary from being overly stimulated in a classroom to the need for additional stimulation to fill a need. Many of these student's abilities are greatly underestimated. Because they are unable to respond in a typical fashion there can be assumptions that they don't know, when in fact, they do know but may choose not to respond, may not understand what response is expected or may have difficulty in responding in the typically expected way.
