With the closure of schools in Spring of 2020 came the closure of access to books for many of my students. Many can't get to the public library, so the school library is their library. Yes, there are eBooks available to them, but there is nothing like the feel, look and smell of a physical book, which most of my students prefer. Currently the library is going through a modernization process and moving to a temporary location, so even grab-and-go checking out of books is currently unavailable. The benefits of reading are numerous, including prevention of learning loss, expansion of vocabulary, growing knowledge and empathy, improving writing skills, and many more. Additionally, the enjoyment of reading helps students become life-long learners while giving them a much needed break from the anxieties and issues of their current world. This is one reason why it’s so important for my students to have access to books during this time, especially those they are interested in and enjoy reading. With this project, I will be able to provide at least some interested students with a book of their own to enjoy and start their own personal library, helping to begin filling the gap until access to the library collection can be restored.
